    Ancestral Chart<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    Captures\u00a0all direct ancestors<\/strong>\u00a0of the person being researched, i.e., 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, 16 great-great-grandparents, and so on. This type of research focuses only on your direct ancestors; their siblings are not included.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

    This approach gives the best chance to uncover \u201cblue blood\u201d or other notable ancestors.<\/p>\n\n

    Represents a complete list of descendants from a single common ancestor. The oldest known ancestor is chosen, and all of their descendants are researched regardless of gender or legitimacy. This type of research is very demanding and usually takes significantly longer to complete than other types.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

    Family Tree<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    Although for a layperson, any of the above products might be called a \u201cfamily tree,\u201d in fact, a family tree is just one type of research. A family tree records exclusively the bearers of the family surname, meaning sons and their descendants who carry the paternal surname. Daughters are usually included with their spouses, but their descendants are generally not researched further. It also includes illegitimate sons of daughters who retained the paternal surname, as well as adopted children who took the family name.<\/p>\n\n

    In the past, a family tree was essential for noble families, as it helped establish property rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
